Johnny Appleseed craft Johnny Appleseed Day is September 26th, and it’s a fun day to celebrate if you are a kindergarten or pre-k teacher. In this post, I’ll share my favorite Johnny Appleseed writing and craft activity to complete during your Apple Week!

Johnny Appleseed Writing and Craft

Here’s a step-by-step guide for how to complete this adorable keepsake craft with your students. Simply print the craft and writing templates onto white cardstock and follow these simple steps:

Color the Pot

Have students use gray crayons or paint sticks to color the pot. For this example, I used these paint sticks from Amazon. They dry in a minute, so you don’t have to wait to cut. Plus, the colors are great!

I always tell the kids it’s okay if they go out of lines a bit because they will cut this out later.

Color the Flesh

Next, use a yellow or peach to color the flesh. This is a great time to review the parts of the apple!

Add the Leaf

Then, color the leaf green and set it aside.

Color the Apple Skin

Finally, color the apple skin. Here, your students will use the color of their favorite apples. I give them three choices: yellow, green, or red. (Note: Prior to doing this craft, we have an apple test tasting where the kids sample Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, and Granny Smith apples.)

Cut Out the Pieces

Have students cut out all the pieces they colored. If cutting is difficult for your students this time of the year, invite buddies from another grade to assist them. We have fifth grade buddies, and we get together once a month. The big kids are always happy to help my kindergarteners with projects like this one!

Apple Writing

Now it’s time for the apple writing. This resource includes a variety of writing templates. Choose the option that works best for you. In the template used here, students complete the sentence: “______(insert name) likes ______(insert color word) apples.”
