Leading up to Groundhog Day…

I love reading Gretchen Groundhog, It’s Your Day! to my kindergarten class before we take our vote.  We also watch clips on United Streaming/ Discovery Education about the history of Groundhog Day.  Next, I give each student a voting slip.  The students fill out the secret ballots.  Then, we use the graph included to show our results.    Last, I tell the children to watch the news in the morning of Groundhog Day so that they can report the news when they get to school.
During Writing Workshop, I have my students complete the writing prompt that goes along with the bulletin board craft.  They complete the prompt, “On Groundhog Day,…” and they finish the sentence starter with their prediction.  For example, they may write “On Groundhog Day, the groundhog will (or will not) see his shadow.”  I collect and save these prompts to attach to the craft portion which they make on the actual day of the holiday.

On Groundhog Day…

On the morning of Groundhog Day, I ask the children if they know the results.  We look back at our graph and decide whether our predictors were accurate.  I hang the appropriate sign (also included in the bundle) in the classroom to show the results.  It will either read “Six more weeks of winter,” or “It will be an early spring!”  I am surely hoping for an early spring!
We then complete the Groundhog Day Bulletin Board Craft and attach the writing at the end.  We also complete the Groundhog Day adjective page later in the school day!
Teacher Tips for prepping and assembling are included in the packet as well!
