January Writing Journals for Kindergarten and First Grade

I used to spend hours planning my writing content for kindergarten.  Over the years, I began creating my monthly journal writing prompts so that I would have all of my writing for the entire month in one file.  These writing journals have been a total game changer in my classroom.  No matter how busy we get, we always get our writing time in for the day.  My January Writing Journals for Kindergarten and First Grade are the perfect post-break writing tool!

January Writing Journals – What’s Included…

As with all of my monthly journals, this resource includes:

  • Your choice of journal covers
  • Two formats of journal writing paper – One version includes a name line should you prefer to use the pages as individual worksheets.  The second version does not include the name line and features an extra writing line
  • Writing Checklist – My clients love this feature.  It helps keep emerging writers on track and provides a self-assessment tool.

Writing Journals for Remote Learning

In addition to using this resource in the classroom, the journals have worked wonderfully for remote learning!  I use my ipad as a document camera to model an example of how to complete the daily prompt.  Students simply turn to the correct page, complete their work, and we end with “Virtual Author’s Chair.”  For assessment purposes, I sometimes ask the parents to submit a photo of the completed page on Google Classroom.
